BARBERSHOP: THE NEXT CUT- Karl “the Flick Fanatic” Sides

barbershop poster

Ice Cube, Common and Cedric are ending gang violence one fade at a time!

The gang (Ice Cube, Common, Eve, Cedric the Entertainer, J B Smoove, Anthony Anderson and Regina Hall) are back at Calvin’s barbershop for the third installment, “Barbershop: The Next Cut.” We are also treated to eye candy played by Nicki Manaj showing her ample cleavage and wearing outfits 3 sizes too small.

Calvin’s (Ice Cube) barbershop right on the line between two feuding gangs and the violence is coming into the shop. Calvin secretly gets with One-Stop (Smoove) to find a new location for Calvin’s on the safer northside of Chicago. Calvin and Angie’s (Hall) son Jalen (Michael Rainey Jr.) is in high school and an aspiring basketball player. The school notified Calvin that Jalen’s been fighting, grades are slipping and Angie found gang colors in his room. That sealed the move.

Everyone else spends days discussing violence, racism, dating and politics in the barbershop with Eddie (Cedric) dropping a humorous one liner. Rashad (Common) also has a son, Kenny (Diallo Thompson), who hangs out with Jalen and being pressured by the gangs. Rashad is also dtruggling with his marriage to Terri (Eve) while fending off the flirtatious Draya (Manaj).

The group decides to donate free haircuts all weekend during the gang cease-fire to show the city officials that the neighborhood can be saved.

Barbershop: the Next Cut is the same barbershop we have seen the previous 2 films. This one does carry the message “Black Lives Matter” and a speech by Common about racial crime, that hopefully gets to the audience. The problem is there is too much message and not enough humor. My favorite scene is when a mother brings her lying little boy in for a haircut from Eddie and he leaves looking like George Jefferson!

If you are a fan of the other Barbershop films, you will like this one too. If you are looking for a funny movie you may want to wait on this haircut until it is on DVD.
