Alicia Vikander has taken over the mantel of Lara Croft in this prequel/reboot of the video game inspired film franchise. This time we are introduced to a younger Lara who has denounced her family fortune out of spite for her father leaving her for an adventure and never returning. Croft pays the bills being a bike messenger. She accepts a challenge of a “fox hunt” where she has to elude the other messengers until a paint bucket runs out to win money to pay her rent. It was a good plan and she was about to win when she ran into a police car landing her in jail.

Ana Miller (Kristin Scott Thomas), family friend running the Croft Foundation since Richard’s disappearance, walks in to bail Lara out. Lara agrees to come and sign the papers the transfer the company to her so that the family doesn’t lose everything. Part of Richard’s will was a puzzle the Lara solved releasing a key. The key opened a secret room under the family crypt where Richard had been working on solving the mystery of Himiko.

Himiko was the Japanese goddess of death, reportedly able to kill with a touch. She was buried alive in a tomb that was hidden from the world on an uncharted island in the far east. Richard had tapes, maps and journals documenting his research and the location of the tomb. On his video he tells Lara to destroy all his notes so they don’t fall into the hands of the evil corporate raiders of Trinity. GAME NIGHT

Starring:

Jason Bateman – Max

Racheal McAdams – Annie

Kyle Chandler – Brooks

Jesse Plemons –  Gary

Bateman and McAdams “roll the bones” in the new comedic thriller “GAME NIGHT”

Max met Annie at a trivia night as opposing team captains, a highly completive pair who fell in love and married in an arcade. Max and Annie continued their rivalry with their friends hosting a weekly game night.

Gary, the next door neighbor who previously was on the invite list to game night, fell off when his wife Linda left him. Max and Annie were creeped out by Gary so they tried to avoid inviting him to game night. They would tell their friends to park down the street and sneak in to the house so not to let Gary know there was a game night going on.

Max was also competitive with his brother Brooks. Brooks was the better athlete, had the coo job on Wall Street, was rich and the worst……..Brooks was better at games! Brooks was in town and came to game night ignoring the instructions rolling up in a classic corvette with the radio blaring raising Gary’s suspicion there was a game night happening.

Brooks told Max he wanted to host next weeks game night. Kevin and Michelle, Ryan and new girlfriend Sarah join Max and Annie at Brooks’ game night. This time game night was a mystery night, someone was going to be kidnapped and there were clues to come save him. The winner would get Brooks’ corvette!

12 STRONG- KARL SIDES (The Flick Fanatic.com)

12 STRONG

Starring: Chris Hemsworth- Capt. Mitch Nelson

Michael Shannon- Hal Spencer

Michael Pena- Sam Diller

Navid Negahban- General Dostum

HEMSWORTH LEADS A GROUP OF SOLDIERS ON AMERICA’S INTIAL RETALIATION FOR THE 9/11 ATTACKS IN THE NEW FILM “12 STRONG”

My favorite thing to see in a film is the line “Based on a true story”, so I was anxious to see the new film “12 Strong” which is base on the covert mission by the United States to retaliate following the 9/11 terrorist attacks by the Taliban.

Immediately following the twin towers tumbling, Capt. Mitch Nelson returns to his base to get his unit back together only to be told his unit has disbanded and he is riding a desk. Communications officer Hal Spencer retracts his retirement for one more mission with Nelson.

Once the unit lands in Afghanistan, Nelson is briefed by Col. Mullholland (William Fichtner) informing the captain he is going to lead his team to join Afghan rebels in the mountains to target Taliban camps for airstrikes. Nelson tells the colonel his team will complete the mission in 3 weeks with no casualties.

Nelson’s group lands in country and meets with General Dostum, leader of the Afghan rebels and hater of the Taliban, who has little respect for Nelson because “he doesn’t have killer eyes”. Nelson promises a 3-week time table only to find out they are going to do the mission on horseback and there are only 12 horses. Now with his unit split in half and outnumbered 100 to 1, Nelson begins his campaign with a reluctant General to destroy the Taliban.

Nelson and his unit target the first Taliban outpost and bomb it. When he sends in the soldiers his unit is ambushed by Taliban re-enforcements coming in from a road in the south. Nelson has it out with Dostum demanding all the information he has so not to be ambushed again. Nelson splits his unit again sending Sam Diller and 3 other men across the desert to flank the Taliban and cut off the re-enforcements coming down the valley leading to the city of Mazar-i-Sharif.

The film is very good and as I said based on actual events, that being said it is dialogue driven and slow at times. The battle scenes are great and I really liked the bond developed between Dostrum and Nelson that continues to this day. It was also very cool during the credits to show the actual soldiers who received no credit for the mission, but recently had a statue dedicated to their bravery at the Ground zero memorial.
