Darkest Hour Review- Karl Sides (The Flick Fanatic.com)

DARKEST HOUR

Gary Oldman is amazing as the British Prime minister responsible for holding back the Nazi invasion in the new war drama “Darkest Hour”.

It is the early days of WWII, Hilter and his Nazi soldiers are invading France on their way to England. The Governing body has lost faith in the Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup) and plan to appoint the stern cigar smoking, drinking politician Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman).

Churchill is trust into leadership with Hitler preparing to kill the entire English army on the shores at Dunkirk. He must also deal with a monarch King George VI (Ben Mendelsohn) who doesn’t trust him and placed Viscount Halifax in his war council to keep tabs on Churchill.

The only support Winston has is from his wife Clementine (Kristin Scott Thomas) and his new secretary Elizabeth Layton (Lily James) and the people of England. Two of my favorite scenes from “Darkest Hour” are the mission Churchill has to save the English army from Dunkirk using local fisherman and the other was Winston jumping on the underground and talking with the locals on his way to Buckingham Palace. It was charismatic as Churchill met with each person and gauged their fears and concerns about the war. Churchill then blindsides Halifax and talks of peace, with a rousing speech to the house that has England ready to fight!

Oldman and Thomas are spectacular and will be brought up during award season for the roles of Winston and his wife Clementine. Darkest Hour is a fabulous war drama and is a must see this winter!
