Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

Starring:

Johnny Depp- Grindelwald

Eddie Redmayne- Newt Scamander

Dan Fogler- Jacob Kowalski

Katherine Waterston- Tina Goldstein

Redmayne and Fogler are back and this time they are chasing Depp around Europe in the new adventure “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”.

Months have passed since Grindelwald tore through New York before being capture by Tina Goldstein (Waterson) and Newt Scamander (Redmayne). The American Ministry of Magic is transferring Grindelwald to England to stand trial allowing him to escape and begin recruiting his follower to take over the muggles or no-mag(ic) world.

Newt is given a choice to join the ministry of magic and work as an auror with his brother Theseus (Callum Turner) but declines because he wants to work with his animals and secretly work with Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) on finding the escaped wizard Grindelwald. Tina is also an auror for the US ministry and in England looking for Grindelwald, but not eager to see Newt. Tina believed a paper that Newt was engaged to school crush Lita LeStrange (Zoe Kravitz) but in fact it was his brother that was to marry her.

Queeny and Jacob also show up at Newt’s house because Queenie wants to marry Jacob and the US ministry forbid it, so she put a spell on her fiancé and they appeared in England where they can be together. Once the spell is lifted from Jacob, Queenie runs to her sister hurt that Jacob wont put her in jail by marrying her. Newt meets with Dumbledore and is told he must find Grindelwald and Credence Barebone, who is working in a circus while trying to find his birth mother. Dumbledore tells Newt he is not able to face Grindelwald and it must be him with the help of his animals. Tina and Newt find Credence and we learn he has a secret as well when Grindelwald tells the boy who he really is!

The Crimes of Grindelwald brings in familiar characters Dumbledore and McGonagal are back and we visit Hogwarts again! The story of Fantastic Beasts: Crimes of Grindelwald is also too familiar with Depp’s evil wizard doing the same thing Voldemort did in the Harry potter series, appearing then raising an army to take over and ending in a battle between good wizards and Grindelwald’s followers. The best thing about this film is Newts new creatures that we get to meet. We also meet Nagini (Claudia Kim) and find out how she becomes the dark wizards pet snake.

Flickanalysis: 3/5 wands

Crimes of Grindelwald is very apparent to be the set-up film for the next film where the wizards will battle.  This installment of Fantastic Beasts is more human than creature and that is a disappointment.
