Today was National Beer Day, so how fitting to have Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme from Broken Lizard (“Super Troopers”, “Club Dread”, “Beerfest”, “The Slammin’ Salmon”) in St. Louis to celebrate! After welcoming them to our town (as we enjoyed our Bud Lights), we got right to it; how is the production of “Super Troopers 2” going? Well, it has been GREAT! Kevin and Steve have loved diving-back into their characters and the film is nearly half completed. They gave us a few World Exclusives as well, such as: they just received a permit to “blow shit up” when they resume filming in July and that the film will pick-up close to where the original film left-off; they even shared that Farva and Mac will share a kiss! Kevin went on to say that his favorite character to play has been Farva, because “of all the dumb shit” he says. Steve loved play Juan Castillo from “Club Dread”, because he modeled the character after his father (who’s Argentinian). His dad was thrilled to be portrayed on the big screen, but he said “the speedo was too big and the accent was too much”, much to Steve’s disagreement. We also talked about Kevin’s experience directing “The Slammin’ Salmon” and working with the late great Michael Clarke Duncan; he said “he was as intense off the set as he was in-person” and there’s a great story they share about him that you can hear below!
Now to the reason we’re here; what is their tour all about and what made them want to go out on a stand-up tour? Well, they aren’t originally stand-up guys, so they have thoroughly enjoyed, both bombing and killing, every minute of it. They said it’s a nice change as opposed to “waiting a year to hear how their joke lands”. They had once previously been in St. Louis during a similar tour, back at the Funny Bone. Tonight’s opening show was a small and intimate one, but the crowd fed-off their energy and the night was filled with plenty of laughs. It was all new material, coupled with tales from some Broken Lizard films and interactions; all of the things every fan wants to hear! Especially the story of how they met their idol, the Patrick Swayze! SO if you’re a fan of their work, you won’t want to miss this limited-time chance to see them in-person! Kevin and Steve will be at the Helium Comedy Club April 7-9, with showtimes on Friday and Saturday at 7:30PM and 10PM! The Helium Comedy Club is a beautiful and intimate venue, one that will have you up-close and personal with your favorite comedic actors and stars! So come-on St. Louis, go out and see Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme this weekend!
While we finished the rest of our beers, we talked about how they all met in the Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Colgate University in New York, including a hilarious tale of how the first time Kevin and Steve met; which was after Steve was caught having stolen Kevin’s coat! They informed us that they have multiple scripts they want to make, including the long-awaited and talked about “Potfest” and a possible third “Super Troopers”, as well as a few TV shows too! We ended the discussion with a fun question (as Steve was using the bathroom); if you could recruit one actor or actress in your next film, who would it be and why? Kevin would love to see Kevin Spacey in a role (he recently divulged his guilty pleasure is “Super Troopers” and they tried to get him recently but he was unfortunately busy filming for “House of Cards”! Steve had a brief interaction with Sam Elliott in a past project and he would love to work with him again! The discussion flew-by, but I left with a better understanding and appreciation for these two actors and comedic talent that I have been a fan of for as long as I can remember!
I want to thank Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme for taking the time to sit-down with me to discuss their past, present, and future! And thank you to the wonderful people at the Helium Comedy Club! Check out the full interview below!!
