We join Keanu Reeves as the assassin John Wick in the next chapter of his story immediately after he and “dog” leave central park in Manhattan NY, racing the clock on his 1-hour grace period given to him by Winston (McShane). Wick races to The NY Public library to retrieve some items hidden in a Russian novel sending his dog along in the taxi to the Continental so Charon (Lance Reddick), the concierge, to take care of him while he runs. Wick runs into Ernest (Boban Marjanovic) at the library and even though he still has time Ernest attempts to collect the 14-million-dollar contract only to have John kill him with a book!
John next navigates the streets of New York as his grace period expires and must kill assassins on his way to the Russian Theater. Wick takes out 3 Asians on motorcycles while he is on horseback! Wick meets with The Director (Angelica Huston) who directs ballet dancers as a front for training assassins for the Russian mafia just like she did with John Wick! The Director explains she is loyal to the High Table and asks John, “All of this over a puppy?” John adds,” and a car!”. John shows her the medallion and says he has a ticket and she is bound to honor it. The Director punches Wick’s ticket that gives him safe passage to Casablanca.
A mysterious woman shows up at the Continental to meet with Winston. The woman is an Adjudicator (Asia Kate Dillon) from the High Table, there to remove Winston from the Continental. Winston tells her he has been loyal for forty years and is not going anywhere. The Adjudicator move on to everyone who help wick after he was deemed Excommunicado for killing Santino on Continental grounds. She visits the Bowery King (Fishburne) telling him he has 7 days to turn over his kingdom to the new king for giving Wick 7 bullets. The Adjudicator stops for sushi on her way to confront the Director, meeting with Zero (Mark Dacascos) recruiting him and his students to carry out the punishments on Wicks allies. Zero and his students eliminate all the guards at the theater for the Adjudicator to tell the Director she was guilty of helping Wick escape. The Director had a sword driven through her hands as a penalty for not killing Wick. The Bowery King was given 7 cuts by a sword for his penalty.
Wick arrives in Casablanca and makes his way to the Continental where an old friend Sofia (Berry) is the manager and is greeted by two German shepherds and a gun shot from Sofia! He gives her the marker and asks her to help him get to the man that runs the high table. Sofia agrees and they kill half of Casablanca escaping as a team with the dogs taking their share of kills, it was awesome! Sofia leaves John at the edge of the desert and he walks for a day before passing out only to wake in the tent of the Elder (Said Taghmaoul). Wicks pleads for his life and loses a finger in exchange for an assignment to bring him back to the fold. The Elder tells Wick he must return to New York and put a bullet in Winston’s head!
John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum is nonstop action with amazing assassinations as John Wick kills his way through 2 hours of film. Wick kills with swords, books, his hands, from horseback and as he says “Guns….lots of Guns!”
This third chapter in the John Wick story arc is the best yet! Halle Berry is introduced and proves herself as a badass killer in her own right! Fishburne, McShane and Reddick return in the roles they made famous in the Wick world. A standout performance comes from Mark Dacascos as Zero the assassin who is also a big fan of Wick and honored to be the one who gets to kill him. Asia Kate Dillion as the emotionless robot-like Adjudicator is a good baddie as the emissary from the High Table!
John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum is “edge of your seat” non-stop action and the best chapter so far in the series and should be seen on the big screen!!! Start the countdown for Chapter 4!
Flickanalysis grade: 5/5 (Parabellum is perfect)
