Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer battle of the bridal bouquet in the Sleeping Beauty sequel “Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”

It has been 5 years since Princess Aurora was woken from her sleep spell by Prince Phillip and she left to live with her godmother Maleficent in the Moors. Now Aurora is Queen of the Moors and the mystical creatures and fairies that inhabit the land. Humans from the nearby kingdom across the river have been invading the Moors poaching fairies and glowing plants bringing them back to the castle.

Prince Phillip, with the help of Thistlewit, Flittle and Knotgrass (Juno Temple, Lesley Manvile and Imelda Staunton) Aurora’s fairy protectors, makes his way to the Moors and meets Aurora then drops to one knee and asks the queen to marry him. This union would join the two kingdoms along with their two families. King John wants the union along with Phillip, but his wife Queen Ingrith is not overjoyed with Aurora or her Godmother Maleficent.

Diaval (Sam Riley), while in crow form, over heard the proposal and flew to the dark Fey, Maleficent immediately to inform her. Maleficent forbids Aurora to marry the human until her goddaughter reminds her she is human. King John invites Aurora and her godmother to the castle for dinner, where Queen Ingrith unloads on the bride to be and enrages Maleficent. King John slips into the same sleep that Aurora just woke from, Queen Ingrith blames Maleficent again for the spell and as the fey escapes the castle she is shot dropping her into the river.

Maleficent’s body is rescued from the river by more dark Feys like her and taken to the hidden land where the Feys live after they fled the Moors during the war with King Stephan. The dark Feys have been preparing for war with the humans and now have a healing Maleficent to lead them.

But Queen Ingrith has a trick up her sleeve and a secret she has been hiding for years that will come forward. Most in-laws have a rehearsal dinner prior to a wedding, but Queen Ingrith goes with a full scale war with the magical creatures from the Moors!

Angelina Jolie is Maleficent and casting Michelle Pfieffer as the mother in law and protagonist is sheer brilliance. Most of the cast returns with newcomer Harris Dickenson picking up Prince Phillip since the original actor Brenton Thwaites was busy filming the new DC Tv series Titans. Elle Fanning is solid as Princess Aurora standing up to both Maleficent and Queen Ingrith to defend her Fiancé and her friends in the Moors.

Maleficent and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil are the best live adaptations Disney has done. Jolie is perfect and the story is even better the its predecessor! Gather the kids and make this weekend a movie party of you might just be cursed to sleep forever!
