Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales Review- Karl Sides (The Flick Fanatic.com)

“Captain” Jack Sparrow is back with his hapless crew of misfits in yet another backwards attempt to save the world in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales”.

Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Gibbs (Kevin McNally) and the rest of the crew are left penniless after a botch bank robbery. They pull a “Fast n Furious” style job dragging a huge safe through town destroying almost every building, Jack hiding in the safe and leaving the door open so that the money spills out during the chase. Gibbs and the crew have had enough and mutiny their captain and desert him.

Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) is still fulfilling his duty as Captain on the Flying Dutchman while his son Henry makes repeated attempts to drown and join him there. Will tells him never to return to the Dutchman. 15 years later Henry Turner (Brenton Thwaites), now a British seaman, sails in search of Poseidon’s Trident, the only item that can save his father and Jack Sparrow, the only man that can get him to it.  Henry is aboard a ship chasing down pirates and is about to follow a ship into “The Devils Triangle”.

The Devil’s Triangle is a cursed area that is home to the dead and their Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem). No one ever lives that enters the triangle. Henry’s ship is sunk and the crew killed. Henry is spared by Salazar to “Tell the Tale” and give a message to Jack Sparrow, the dead come for him. Henry is jailed as a traitor for being the last crewman alive and telling his outlandish story of the ship and the triangle. While in jail, Henry meets a girl who is to be hung as a witch, Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), and learns she is an astronomer (not a witch) and searches for the same trident.

Carina and Jack are rescued from the gallows by Henry and the rest of Jacks crew. They all set sail with Carina navigating them using the stars as a map to the island where Poseidon’s trident is hidden. Jack is not the only one searching for the weapon, The British Navy, Capt. Barbosa (Geoffrey Rush) and Capt. Salazar all race to find it and Jack Sparrow.

Dead Men Tell No Tales is fun just like all the preceding “Pirates” films and this one has one of the best villains in Javier Bardem’s Capt. Salazar. Dead Men also ties up a lot of the question left open by the previous films including Jack’s back story and how he outsmarted Salazar at the Devil’s triangle and becoming Capt. Jack Sparrow. We are reunited with Will Turner, Elizabeth Swan and we learn a secret about Carina Smyth.

Dead Men is a very good film and personally I put it in a tie for second with Dead Man’s Chest in the history of the Pirates films. I encourage you to sail into a theater asap and welcome back everyone’s favorite pirate and enjoy a great 3D film with some of the best effects (skeletal sharks and the dead pirates) this year. Also keep an eye out for Jack’s Uncle played by Sir Paul McCartney!

Stick around after the long list of credits for a very important scene that will leave you wondering….
