Tony's Take

Connor Friel AKA Conner4Real is a global pop superstar, on the verge of releasing his enormously-anticipated sophomore album, “Connquest”.  It all started as The Style Boyz (Connor, and his best friends Lawrence and Owen), as they quickly struck-fame with a few singles, such as: “Donkey Roll” and “Karate Guy”.  But as Connor’s focus becomes too much for the group, he begins to focus-more on his solo act, thus breaking-up The Style Boyz.  Lawrence stays’ on as Connor’s DJ, but Owen gets away from the music scene.  With the hopes of his fame going through-the-roof, a documentary crew follows-him around, however, he is met with a soul-crushing letdown.  His album falls flat, and he seeks a tour to get things moving again.  After a few lowly-attended shows, an opening act is sorted out, Hunter the Hungry.  As Hunter begins to upstage Connor’s popularity and a string of well-intended publicity events go horribly wrong, Connor hits rock bottom.  He must quickly decide what is more important, his ego or his friends; with the wrong choice possibly leading to the end of his career.

The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone) hit fame through Saturday Night Live with their hysterical shorts, such as: “I’m On A Boat”, “I Just Had Sex”, and “Jack Sparrow”.  Now, they finally have their own movie!  While the focus is almost squarely-on Samberg (and absolutely kills it), both Schaffer and Taccone have their moments as well.  Sarah Silverman plays Connor’s publicist, Paula.  Tim Meadows is Harry, former manager of “The Style Boyz” and current manager of Connor4Real.  Imogen Poots plays Connor’s girlfriend, Ashley.  Bill Hader plays a Connor’s incompetent roadie.   Chris Redd plays Connor’s opening act, rapper Hunter the Hungry.  Joan Cusack has a few brief scenes as Connor mom.  Maya Rudolph plays Connor’s recent corporate sponsor, Deborah (pronounced Da-Bor-A).  Will Arnett steals every single scene he’s in as the head of CMZ, a beautifully-satirical take on TMZ and its perfect!  As for the cameos, here are just a few: Martin Sheen, Adam Levine, Mariah Carey, Snoop Dogg, Will Forte, Simon Cowell, Carrie Underwood, Usher, DJ Khaled, Seal, Pink, Questlove, Jimmy Fallon, Ringo Star, and A$AP Rocky.  The rest are a secret, but for you “The Lonely Island” fans, there a few other that you’ll love!

“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” is easily the funniest satirical entertainment industry movie, with a great soundtrack, countless cameos, and jokes where no topic is considered taboo!  First of all, there was literally no other person (or group) that could have pulled this off.  Samberg can walk the line between stupidity and arrogance so well, and it’s what makes his character.  “The Lonely Island” has put-out a few hits and they’ve only added to that list with this film.  They helped with nearly every track on the film, with some of favorites being: “I’m So Humble”, “Equal Rights”, “Finest Girl”, “Ibitha”, and “Incredible Thoughts” just to name a few!  It’s safe to say that I’ll be buying the soundtrack as soon as it hits!  We are also treated (treated?) to the funniest full-frontal male nudity scene in a comedy in quite some time (can you guess who that belongs to?).  Did I mention the count-less number of famous cameos, even some ones hidden from the marketing!  I’m sure you will hear people bad-mouthing what they call “child-like humor” and “insensitivity”, but this is honestly one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time.  So many of the jokes are on-point, making fun of so many things popstars in our World do on a daily basis.  It’s biggest issue is the cliche of the story, but the humor makes it work well-enough that it’s only a minor flaw.  I will say that I had my doubts going-into the film, but I walked-out of the theater with a giant smile on my face, still laughing from jokes that I heard over an hour ago!  “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” has short run time of 86 minutes, leaving you laughing nearly from start to finish.  Do yourself a favor this weekend; go out and see this downright hysterical, satirical-take on our entertainment industry!  Trust me, you’ll be glad you did!

“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” follows “Connor4Real”, the global pop singer megastar.  The film features plenty of laughs, satirical jokes, and plenty of famous cameos.  If you’re heading to the movies this weekend, “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” is your funniest and most entertaining choice!!
