WONDER WOMAN 1984

Gal Gadot- Diana Prince/ Wonder Woman

Pedro Pascal- Max Lord

Kristen Wiig- Barbara Minerva/ Cheetah

Even Wonder Woman needs to be careful what she wishes for!

Director Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot return with DC Comics prominent female superhero Wonder Woman fighting evil in the decade of greed and decadence, the 80’s. Wonder Woman 1984 takes place 65 years after we saw Steve Trevor sacrifice himself to win WWI and has Diana Prince still missing her one true love.

Its 1984 and the mysterious woman that fought by the side of the Allies taking down the Germans is now still a mystery fighting crime in Washington DC while her dual identity works at the Smithsonian. WW84 opens with a flashback of a young Diana participating in an Olympic type event with her Amazon sisters for a prestigious golden set of armor. Young Diana makes a mistake and ends up losing to Asteria. Then we flash forward to a Washington Dc mall and a group of thugs robbing a jewelry store, only they want the historical artifacts they are selling on the black market and not the diamonds.  Wonder Woman (Gadot) shows up, throwing her headband taking out the surveillance cameras, then proceeds to wrap up the four crooks and saves a little girl that was being dangled from the top level of the mall.

The artifacts are brought to the Smithsonian for verification by Diana Prince’s forensic archeologist team headed by nerdy girl Barbara Minerva (Kristen Wiig). Barbara finds one piece, a Mayan wishing stone that grants wishes to the person holding the stone. A moving guy touches it a sarcastically wishes for coffee, then a Smithsonian intern arrives with an extra cup of coffee and hands it to the mover, He takes a drink burning his mouth, this doesn’t go unnoticed by Diana. Later that evening, following a dinner with Diana, she is accosted by a vagrant near the monuments as she was heading back to the institute. Diana shows up out of nowhere throwing the drunk through a trash bin and saving her co-worker. The next day both women make a wish on the stone, Diana wishes for Steve Trevor to return to her and Barbara wishes she was like Diana.

Despicable Me 3 Review- Karl Sides (The Flick Fanatic.com)

Despicable Me 3

Making a third film in this series is truly “DESPICABLE!”

Everyone’s favorite little yellow criminals are back….sort of? The Minions, Gru and his new wife Lucy and the girls (Margo, Edith and Agnes) all return for yet another despicable film aptly titled “Despicable Me 3”. Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig return to voice Gru and Lucy, but Carrell pulls double duty voicing Gru’s twin brother Dru!

Gru and Lucy are now agents at the AVL, the Anti Villainy League and battling the new master villain Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker). Bratt is a washed up child star from the 80’s that turned to villainy when his TV show was cancelled. Balthazar attempted to steal the world’s biggest diamond only to be thwarted by Lucy and Gru. The AVL didn’t appreciate the effort when they fired Gru and Lucy for letting Bratt escape.

Margo, Edith and Agnes (Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier, Nev Scharrel) are getting used to having Lucy as their new mom and now

learn that both their parents are unemployed. One of the cutest scenes in the movie is when Agnes sets up a stand in the front yard to sell her toys to help earn money for the family. Adorable! Notice we haven’t mentioned the yellow guys yet??? The minions, now led by Mel, are excited by Gru’s unemployment thinking they were going back to villainy!! Gru tells them no and they leave!

Who You Gonna Call…….Now?

Paul Fieg reinvents a comedy classic with an all female crew led by Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy in Ghostbusters (2016). As in the 1984 original, a group of scientists are faced with a ghost apocalypse taking over NYC! Co-starring with Wiig and Mccarthy are Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Chris Hemsworth that make up the new Ghostbusters crew.

Erin Gilbert (Wiig) is a college professor and about to get tenure when a man (Ed Begley Jr.) asks her to help rid a classic New York mansion of the ghost living in the basement. Gilbert tells the man she is a scientist and doesn’t believe in ghosts. The man produces a book she co-wrote and Erin knows her old friend Abby Yates (McCarthy) produced the book without her permission. Gilbert must get the book off the internet before it ruins her chances of tenure.

Abby currently chasing the paranormal with her partner Jillian Holtzmann (McKinnon) and explained to Erin that they were broke and needed cash. Abby makes a deal to remove the book if Erin introduces her and Holtzmann to the guy with the ghost problem. The ladies come face to face with the ghost of Gertrude Aldridge, a girl that killed her entire family. Gertrude escapes the house and the ladies are euphoric…..they have seen a real ghost!

Rowan North (Neil Casey) an end of the world wacko, is placing electromagnetic devices around New York that generate ghosts like the Aldridge girl and the electrified prisoner in the subway that the ladies encounter next.  Patty Tolan (Jones) subway agent, decides to join the girls since she has a knowledge of New York streets and her dad has a spare car they can use. Next they hire a receptionist, Kevin (Hemsworth) that is handsome but dumb as a brick! The Ghostbusters are born.

Denounced by the Mayor (Andy Garcia) in the press but financed in secret to get rid of the ghosts! New York becomes over run by an army of specters including rat ghosts! Holtzmann invents new and more powerful weapons to combat the ghosts. Will they survive or will the ghost run New York?

Comparisons will be made to the original, but all fans will enjoy the homage to the 1984 film with cameos by Dan Ackroyd, Slimer, the Staypuff marshmallow man and many more! The ghosts are more impressive and visually stunning in 3D. McKinnon and Hemsworth carry the comedy load in this flick with Wiig as the straight woman and McCarthy doing the same shtick she always does in her movies.

I was very skeptical walking into this film but laughing as I left! Go see the new Ghostbusters and be sure to stay for the credits and you will laugh all the way to your car! Who you gonna call….GHOSTBUSTERS 2016!

Rated PG-13 (sci-fi violence)
