Fanatic Interview with Melissa Rauch from “The Bronze”

MELISSA RAUCH GOES FOR G…….BRONZE?

I as fortunate to see an early screening of Melissa Rauch’s (Bernadette from Big Bang Theory) new film “The Bronze” , which she stars and co-wrote with her husband. You can get the Flickanalysis this Friday (3/18), but I sat down with some fellow critics in a round table format to interview Melissa about the film.

Let me start by saying Melissa is one of the nicest celebrities I have ever met and a complete contrast from her character Hope in “The Bronze”. You can hear the complete interview below (spoilers revealed in the interview) , but here are some highlights from the questions asked:

*It wasn’t planned to break the record for using the “F” word in a film, Hope could make Scarface blush!

I asked Melissa if she was an athlete or did any gymnastics in school? She told us that she was the opposite…the most unatheletic person you would meet. The idea came from her liking to watch the Olympics with her husband and a trip back to her home town after her first acting job and was given a free pretzel by a fan!

There were many questions about scenes in the film but we also asked about co-star Gary Cole who plays Hope’s father who goes from pushing parent to dominated provider for Hope. We asked about Stan (Cole) having no life and his only relationship is with his fish. Melissa told us Hope is a handful and all encompassing, keeping Stan to herself.

*Melissa added Hope doesn’t like herself very much, then I added “Except in the first 10 mins of the film” which got a laugh from Melissa. She added Hope loves her past success and continues to live it.

I asked What Bernadette would think of “The Bronze”? Melissa said she would like the film, she would be shocked but would like the movie!

EDDIE THE EAGLE- Karl “the Flick Fanatic” Sides

Most people have dreams that they let fade, Eddie Edwards was born with a dream of greatness and refuse to let obstacles and cynics stand in his way!

Eddie Edwards (Taron Egerton), a British boy born with a pair of bad knees and a dream of being an Olympic athlete. At a young age Eddie would hold his breath in the bath tub and when he made a minute, he packed a bag and headed to the bus station telling his mom, ”I’m off to the Olympics!” Eddie’s father regularly had to pick Eddie up at the station taking him home telling his son he is going to be a plasterer not an Olympian.

Eddie moved through Olympic events as he grew older and failed miserably at swimming, the javelin and hammer throw. Just as Eddie is ready to concede defeat, Eddie spots the new man made ski slopes in town and switches to the winter Olympics.

Eddie Edwards becomes a very good skier, winning trophies. The British Olympic committee comes to town to select skiers for the 1988 winter games in Vancouver Canada. Eddie is one of the better skiers but because he isn’t the athletic looking person, the judges tell him the same thing his dad did, “You will never be an Olympic athlete.” Eddie starts working with his dad plastering houses when he sees his first person ski jump on TV.

Eddie is back on his Olympic dream!

Eddie researches that Britain doesn’t have a ski jumping team. Eddie travels to Germany, the Olympic ski jumping training center, to learn to survive a 70 meter jump. Eddie hooks up with ex-Olympic hopeful Bronson Peary (Hugh Jackman), a ski jumper thrown off the American team just prior to the games, and the one Eddie wants him to coach him.

Bronson is reluctant until Eddie ends up in the hospital following a tumble from the 70 meter. Eddie manages to land some short jumps that make him a qualified athlete, until the British Olympic committee triples the distance to qualify. Peary works with Eddie n the European circuit and Eddie lands a jump and qualifies to represent Great Britain at the Olympics!

Eddie the Eagle is going to Vancouver to compete in the 1988 Olympics!

Eddie the Eagle is based on the true story of Eddie Edwards who competed in the 1988 games an had an unorthodox jumping style and would flap is arms for the crowd who coined him “Eddie the Eagle”. This is a feel good story to inspire folks to follow their dreams featuring great performances by Jackman, Egerton, Keith Allen and Jo Hartley as Eddie’s parents.

RACE- Karl “the Flick Fanatic” Sides

RACE” tells the heroic journey of a boy in Ohio who endures racism, hate and injustice on his way to Berlin and Olympic stardom.

Stephan James is Jesse Owens, a boy, boyfriend and father, who grew up in Cleveland and went on to college at Ohio State University. Owens about to catch a bus to Columbus to run track, but must say goodbye his 4 yr. old daughter Gloria and his high school sweetheart Ruth (Shanice Banton) promising to return to marry her.

Larry Snyder (Jason Sudeikis), former track star and coach of the OSU track and field team, fighting to save his job and puts the flames of losing out with a bottle of whiskey. Jesse Owens walks into his office and Snyder agrees to make the fastest boy in America better and part of the Olympic team competing in Berlin. Snyder asked Owens, “Why did you pick Ohio State, not the most forward thinking campus in the country (racism)”. Owens replied,” Because you were here”.
