CATS

Starring:

Idris Elba- Macavity

Judi Dench- Old Deuteronomy

Francesca Hayward- Victoria

Laurie Davidson- Mr. Mistoffelees

Steven Spielberg and Director Tom Hooper bring the long running successful musical about some “funky” felines to the big screen with “Cats”.

Cats is the award-winning Broadway Musical that has been a fixture on the great white way and now executive producer Steven Spielberg and Director Tom Hooper (Chicago) bring it to the masses on the big screen with an A-list of stars singing and shaking their CGI tails.

The story is that an abandoned house cat named Victoria (Hayword) is befriended by a group of Jellicle cats and told that is was the night of the annual ball where a cat will be chosen for a new life. All the Jellicle cats will sing for the opportunity to be renewed. That is, all except the mysterious Macavity (Elba) a magic cat that is abducting cats so they miss the ball and makes his odds better to be chosen.

The cat population in this film is very prestigious and diversified from a fat house cat Jennanydots (Rebel Wilson) to an elder actor named Gus the Theater Cat and a little minx named Bombalurina (Taylor Swift). Victoria also not6iced a Cat that has been scorned by the others, Grizabella (Jennifer Hudson), a rich cat that is now down and out.

ISN’T IT ROMANTIC- Karl Sides (The Flick Fanatics)

Published by:

ISN’T IT ROMANTIC

Starring:

Rebel Wilson- Natalie

Liam Hemsworth- Blake

Adam Devine- Josh

Rebel Wilson takes aim at Rom-Coms in her new comedy “Isn’t it Romantic”.

Natalie (Wilson) grew up fantasizing about a romantic love affair like the ones she watch in movies like “Pretty Woman”, only to be told by her alcoholic mother (Jennifer Saunders) that “girls like us don’t get guys like that (Richard Gere), we don’t look like her (Julia Roberts)”. So grown up Natalie is now an architect and doesn’t believe in romance and kills all rom-com stereotypes in the real world.

Natalie is one of the best architects at her firm but is invisible to all the executives and the rest of the staff treat her like a coffee girl. Natalie joins a meeting to pitch a new client (Hemsworth) only to be asked to get him coffee. Natalie does have two friends at the firm, Whitney (Betty Gilpin) her assistant that spends her entire day watching romantic comedies on her computer and Josh who is Natalie’s positive re-enforcement at the office and has a crush on her. His approach is muted when Natalie gets on her soap box explaining to Whitney how desperate she is to believe the false stereotypes that Rom-Coms sell to people.

Natalie is mugged in the subway and runs face first into a steel girder fleeing the robber knocking her out. She wakes in a hospital being examined by a gorgeous doctor and realizes she is in a Rom-Com fantasy world! Natalie is given the “Pretty Woman” outfit by the hospital to go home in and she is almost hit by a limo with Blake, the firm’s new client inside. Blake is smitten immediately by Natalie and offers to take her home. Natalie’s apartment is triple its size, she has a supermodel waredrobe and her dog is clean and actually minds her.

Natalie is in Romantic-Comedy Hell! How does she escape back to the real world?

Last Call Pitches

It’s been 2 years since we last saw the Bellas, winning the World Championships and adding a new member to their acapella group.  Now, the girls are enjoying their retirement, or so they lead each other to believe.  Beca (Anna Kendrick) is working as a music producer for a shoddy artist.  Fed-up with her career, she quits with the hope to Continue reading

How To Be Single- Karl “The Flick Fanatic” Sides

Published by:

Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson teach you how to avoid falling into a relationship in the  big city in the new film “How to be Single”.

If “Sex and the City” is the guide to women dating in the big city, then “How To Be Single” is the guide to women getting free drinks, having sex and avoiding the entanglement of a relationship. Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson and Leslie Mann give us three different views on dating in this romantic comedy.

Alice (Dakota Johnson) is ready to graduate college and comes up with the idea to take  break from her boyfriend to make sure they are right for each other. Alice is now single and working as an intern at a law firm in NYC. Her first day on the job she meets Robin (Rebel Wilson), who is going to take Alice around and show her how to be a single girl in New York.

Robin has all these “theories” about dating including how many drinks to have before you hook up and how many days to wait to call a guy back. Also if she sees use emoji’s in a text she will tit punch you! Robin takes Alice to her favorite bar so Alice can get busy with bartender Tom (Anders Holm). Tom believes in staying single, so much so he even has his apartment set up without anything for breakfast and no water so girls will leave after sex.

Alice is staying with her sister Meg (Leslie Mann), a gynecologist that doesn’t want kids or a husband until she holds a patient’s baby for 20 minutes. Meg then decides to get pregnant from a sperm donor. Meg comes in to find Alice passed out on the couch, then meets Robin who appears from behind the couch. Meg leaves for the hospital just before the guy appears in the kitchen that Robin had sex with the night before.

After hooking up with Tom numerous times and failed dating experiences with a David (Damon Wayans Jr.) a single father getting over the death of his wife, Alice decides it is time to go back to her college boyfriend Josh (Nicholas Braun). Problem is Josh has moved on and is living with his new girlfriend.

So Alice is now single in the city wanting a relationship. How To Be Single was better than I thought it would be, but still not worth paying full price to see it at the theaters. It is one of the better roles by Rebel Wilson and my favorite scenes are with Meg and Ken (Jake Lacy), a male receptionist at the law firm where Alice and Robin work. Leslie Mann is hilarious trying to find a way to tell a younger man that loves her, she is already pregnant with a baby from a sperm bank!

How to be Single also features some good supporting performances by Alison Brie (Community) and Jason Mantzoukas (The League). If you are a fan of Rebel Wilson or just need a rom com to see, catch this one at the bargain matinee. I would really wait for DVD.
