“White Boy Rick” is the story of how a teenager goes from FBI informant to Drug Kingpin in Detroit.

Director Yann Demange brings the story of Rick Wershe Jr. aka “White Boy Rick”, a teenager who navigates from selling illegal homemade silencers for his dad (McConaughey) to becoming an informant for the FBI to finally becoming the drug lord in Detroit in 1985.

14 yr. old Rick Wershe, a high-school drop out that lives in the Detroit suburbs with his sister Dawn and works with his father buying guns and retro fitting them with home-made silencers then re-selling them for a major profit. Dawn (Powley) is dating a drug dealer and is strung out on crack cocaine, but finally has it out with her dad and runs away from home to her boyfriend’s apartment.

Rick sells some AK-47 rifles with his dad’s silencers to the local drug dealer Johnny ‘Lil Man’ Curry (Jonathan Majors) and is welcomed in to the group that includes Rick’s best friend Boo (RJ Cryer) who happens to be Lil Man’s brother. FBI Agents Snyder (Leigh) and Byrd (Rory Cochrane) pay a visit to the Wershes and explain that they have evidence of the illegal silencers, but they want the “big fish” Lil Man Curry.

Rick agrees to help the FBI to keep his dad out of jail. Rick takes money from Detective Jackson (Brian Tyree Henry) to make buys from Lil Man’s drug houses to gather evidence. Jackson also gives rick a brick of drugs to sell so not to raise suspicion that he is working with the Feds and he gets to keep the cash from the sale of the drugs. The FBI has Rick dealing drugs.

Greed is not always good, when you can’t spend to save your family.

All the Money in the World is the new film by Ridley Scott based upon the actual events surrounding the kidnapping of John Paul Getty’s grandson in Rome.

John Paul Getty is the richest man in the world. He explains to his head of security Fletcher Chase,” If you can count your money ..YOU ARE NOT RICH”. Getty is constantly asked for donations from strangers, including his son John Paul Getty II, his wife Gail and their kids ask Getty for an opportunity to work. The old man puts his son in charge in Europe and has his grandson John III help opening his mail.

Gettys son becomes a drug addict doing heroine with the Beatles in India and his wife Gail files for divorce. Getty and a team of lawyers comes after her and plans to buy her off. Gail takes nothing but her kids. Getty hates to lose and especially doesn’t like to lose family.

The mobs in Rome view kidnapping as an industry and see the Getty grandson as a way to make money. A group led by an Italian named Cinquanta takes the boy one evening and drives him to southern Italy. Cinquanta’s demands Millions for the safe return of the boy. Gail calls Getty to beg her father in law for the money to save her son. Getty is asked on the news “How much would you pay for the return of your grandson?” only to have the old man reply “NOTHING.”

Getty does care for his grandson and sends his head of security to monitor Gail and handle the negotiations with the kidnappers. The negotiations drag on and Cinquanta sells the boy to an investor that decides to move things along by sending the boys ear to his mother.

All the Money in the World is a fantastic film, telling the story of the world’s richest man and how he choses not to spend his fortune, not even to save his family. Michelle Williams and Christopher Plummer are locks for awards this winter. This is also one of Wahlberg’s best performances.

Go see All the Money in the World this week and learn about how greed is not always good!

Deepwater Horizon- Karl Sides (The Flick Fanatic)

DEEPWATER HORIZON

dwh-poster-2

Wahlberg and Russell bring the greatest oil disasters in US history to the big screen in “Deepwater Horizon”

Peter Berg directs this tale of the crew of the BP oil drilling platform “Deepwater Horizon” with corporate cost cutting, accelerating timelines and faulty/failing equipment as the platform fails. Mark Wahlberg stars as Mike Williams, the crewmember that is responsible for patching the equipment and keeping the station working. The captain referred to as “Mr. Jimmy” is Jimmy Harrell played by Kurt Russell, who calls the BP officials on their negligence and insists on test before the DWH moves on to a new drilling location.

April 2010, Mike Williams (Wahlberg), Mr. Jimmy (Russell) and Andrea Fleytas (Gina Rodriguez) are aboard a helicopter in route to their job, a crew on the BP Oil drilling platform Deepwater Horizon. The Deepwater Horizon is located about 10 mile of the Louisiana coast and is in the final stages of drilling out the mud from the ocean floor before it moves on to a new location. Jimmy finds out the BP executives cancelled a concrete test, a test crucial to the stability of the station, and he is furious. Jimmy insists on a negative pressure test to see if the concrete base on the ocean floor is going to hold. Mike Williams (Wahlberg) agrees and begins to rifle off all the things broken at the station when asked by Vidrine (John Malkovich) as the BP folks thinks the crew were just dragging their feet. There is cautious and then there is careless.

The crew does the negative test and the results show pressure, but no mud is coming up the pipe. So Vidrine is satisfied, but Jimmy is not. Vidrine agrees to run another pressure test on the auxiliary line. As the test is being done, there are ripples on the ocean floor and the pressure red lines and mud is spewed out of the pipe all over the DWH. The crew tried to shut down the pipes and normalize the pressure, but there are gas alarms everywhere just as the plat form explodes.

Now the crew is on a Oil rig, 10 miles into the ocean and it’s on fire. Jimmy, who was in the shower at the time of the explosion, trying to feel his way to the command center with glass in his face and one eye swollen shut. Mike and the surviving crew try to get to the lifeboats. Mike gets an injured crewmate on the boat and goes back for Jimmy and Andrea. When he returns to the launch area, he sees that the boats have left him and Andrea on the burning rig.

Deepwater Horizon is an exciting thrill ride and should be seen on the big screen, I even recommend spending the big bucks for the IMAX version. Deepwater Horizon also stars Kate Hudson as Williams wife (in a film with her step-father for the first time). All the monitors and equipment in the film are accurate and Mike Williams and Jimmy Harrell themselves were on set to consult.
